Basic Tools For Sewing

There are some sewing tools that you can’t even begin without. The correct sewing tool makes any sewing project easier. Knowing which tool to select and where to use it will simplify and improve the outcome of each
sewing step. The sewing tools listed below are the basic tools of the trade that help you save precious sewing
time. We do have demonstrations video on some of the tools on this site, but you can also ask for a demonstration of a particular product or tool at one of the local sewing stores. We also have beginner sewing kits available for purchase in our virtual store.
 

 

Basket

To hold all you supplies, a specialliy made sewing basket is ideal as it will have all the right comparments and holders. You can also use tool boxes, containers, and other boxes you can decorate.

Pins and Pin Cushion

Straight pins range in lengths from 1/2" to 1 7/8". Look for sharp, smooth, rustproof pins that can bend
without breaking. Use different types for general sewing, quilting, working with silks or knits. For more 

Chalk  

To make temporary markings on your fabric or to trace your pattern onto your fabric.

Iron & Ironing Board

You cannot sew without these. While sewing, keep your iron warmed to the wool setting, and  be
prepared to press each seam after you stitch it, depending on the fabric’s ability to handle heat.
Never
stitch across a seam that hasn’t been pressed. It’s a sure way to make your project look homemade
Lint Roller

A roll of one sided adhesive paper used to pick up extra or loose thread and lint when sewing.

Scissors

Invest in a good quailty pair and be sure to use them only for sewing and they will last forever. Also buy a smaller pair for cutting paper patterns and sniping while sewing.

Sewing Guage

Use for measuring and marking everything from pleats to buttonholes.

Hand sewing needles

A long slender tool with a pointed evd. Good when in need of sewing button on new or old garment and for repairing and emergency sewing. buy one packet with a variety of sizes. Also have some standard machine needles.

Seam Ripper

A curved metal cutting blade used to “rip” stitches or “reverse sew.” One end of the

 

Thimble:

A cap worn ove the finger to push needle in sewing.These are optional and take time to getting use to. It should fit snugly on your middle finger.

 

Thread:

The basic and mpst versatile are cotton-wrapped polyester and 100 percent polyester. Buy four spools: black, white, khaki, and clear.
