THE EASY SKIRT RECIPE MATERIALS NEEDED
So this is probably the easiest project you'll learn to make. No pattern needed. This skirt will be made based on your hip measurment. Measuring tape is required. First take your tape measure and measure your hip size. Mark you hip size on a piece of paper so you do not forget. Then add six more inches to your waist measurement for seam allowance and ease of your skirt. Then measure from your waist to down to where you want your skirt to end. Muslim sister's skirt lengths are usually 32-36 inches in length. Add about 2 inches for your hem and waistband allowance. Now, take your fabric and lay it out (do not fold). With your measuring tape , on the widest part of your fabric measure across to the size you measured in the first step. Take your fabric chalk or marker and mark the width of your skirt, then do the same for the lenght of your skirt, marking your measurement to the size you measured for the lenght of your skirt. Talk your chalk and draw a line down. You should now have a rectangle drawn on your fabric. Cut your fabric on the line you drew. Fold your fabric in half on the wrong side, making sure you fold corner to corner. Now using your sewing guage meausre 5/8 inches for your sewing allowance at the side edge of your fabric that does not have the fold line. Begin to pin your fabric from the top edge of the 5/8 sewing allowance to the bottom edge. (For a reminder on how to pin or cut fabric see our sewing tutorial video) Sew your seam, then press open. (for a reminder about seams see our sewing tutorial video) Zig zag or serge your edges. For your skirt band, at the top of your skirt fold skirt over 1/4 inch and press down. sew along bottom edge. Then using your sewing guage measure about 3/4 inch, fold over and press and pin at the bottom edge. Sew along the bottom edge leaving room to insert your elastic. see picture to your right. Take your elastic and with your measuring tape measure your elastic the size of your actual hip measurement minus two inches. Cut. Using a safety pin, pin one end of the elastic and insert into your skirt. (See our sewing tutorial on elastic for assistance) When you get to the end sew ends of your elastic together. (if your elastic is a little long making the size of your skirt big, you can cut it to shorten it)Stretch around your skirt band to loosen your elastic. For your hem, at the bottom of your skirt measure about 1/4 inch and press down. Sew along the edge. Then measure about 3/4 inch and fold over. Press and pin. Then sew along edge for a nice finsh. Press again. You did it. APBTA! Now try on your new skirt. To view this on video, visit our store or join our fabric club for the full demonstation. As Salaam Alaikum
